Google Maps Saved Places Not Showing? Causes and Fixes
Saved places missing in Google Maps on iPhone, Android or a computer? How to tell a hidden list from a sync bug, what the Timeline change didn't touch, and what to do.

On this page
Saved places that vanish from Google Maps are almost always still in your Google Account. The usual causes are being signed in to a different account, a list set to Hide on your map, Incognito mode (which switches off Saved), or a phone that hasn't synced. Open Google Maps on a computer, sign in with the same account and click Saved: if the places are there, the problem is the app, not your data. They're really gone only when a list was deleted, an editor removed places, or a list grew past Google's 3,000-entry limit.
Below: a two-minute check to tell which case you're in, every cause we could confirm in Google's help pages and community threads, and how to keep a copy before your next trip.
First: are the places gone, or just not showing?
Do these three checks in order. They take about two minutes and decide everything that follows.
- Check the account. In the Google Maps app, tap your profile picture at the top right. Saved places belong to the Google Account you saved them with, and Google's help page on saving places says you need to be signed in to save and find them. If you use a work and a personal account, switch and look again.
- Check on a computer. Open Google Maps in a browser, sign in with the same account and click Saved at the top left (it may sit behind the Menu icon). Google says your saved places are there "on any computer, phone, or tablet."
- Check Google's Saved page. In a December 2024 Google Maps Community thread about Want to go and Favorites showing zero places, a Diamond Product Expert suggested opening google.com/interests/saved. If your places appear there, the data is on Google's servers and hasn't synced to the phone.
Then match what you saw:
| What you see | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| Lists are empty in the app, but the computer shows them | The phone hasn't synced, or the app is on another account |
| Lists are there, but their pins are missing from the map | The list is hidden on your map |
| The Saved tab is blank or unavailable | Incognito mode is on |
| One list is missing everywhere | It was deleted, edited by someone else, or it's a shared list you lost access to |
| All lists are missing everywhere, and others report the same | A problem on Google's side |
| Places you visited are missing, but lists are fine | Timeline, not saved places |
The list is hidden on your map
Every list has a show and hide switch. A hidden list keeps its places but drops its pins from the main map. Google's help page on lists gives the same steps everywhere:
- iPhone and Android: tap You, tap More next to the list, then Show on your map.
- Computer: click Saved, click More next to the list, then Show on your map.
Lists you saved from other people work the same way. Google says their places appear on your main map "unless you hide or show the list," so a friend's long restaurant list can crowd your own pins until you hide it.
Two display quirks look like missing places but aren't. Users on r/GoogleMaps report that saved places sometimes show as small grey dots instead of their list icons, and that some appear only when you zoom in. And the Recently saved and Nearby saved sections of the You tab follow their own rules: Google's You tab help page says Recently saved is unavailable if you haven't saved anything in the last 180 days, and Nearby saved appears only when you have saved places within 25 km (about 16 miles). An empty card there says nothing about your lists.
You're signed in to the wrong account
It's the first thing volunteers ask about in Google's community threads, and the easiest cause to miss on a phone with several accounts. Lists stay with the account that made them and don't merge. If you find your places under another account, either keep planning there, or share the list from that account and open the link in the other one, where Google's help says you can tap Save list.
Incognito mode is on
Incognito mode in Google Maps turns off more than history. Google's Incognito help page lists Saved among the features that aren't available while it's on (the iPhone version calls it Your Places), along with offline maps and Timeline. If the Saved tab looks blank, tap your profile picture and look for Turn off Incognito mode.
The app hasn't synced
If the computer shows your lists and the phone doesn't, your data is safe and the app is behind. Try these in order, checking the Saved tab after each:
- Update Google Maps from the App Store or Google Play.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Switch accounts and back. The product expert in the December 2024 thread suggested tapping your profile picture, choosing Use Maps without an account, opening Saved, then switching back to your account to start a fresh sync.
- Clear the cache on Android: Settings > Apps > Maps > Storage > Clear cache (names vary by phone maker). Avoid Clear storage unless you have to: it resets the app, which can also remove offline areas you've downloaded.
- Reinstall on iPhone if nothing else works.
These failures come in waves. In September 2023, iPhone users reported that lists disappeared from the iOS app after an update while staying visible on desktop. In December 2024, the community thread above and a post on r/GoogleMaps described Want to go, Favorites and Travel plans suddenly showing zero places. The product expert replying wrote that similar questions had been increasing for a week and that "this may be a problem with Google Maps."
If you're caught in one, the computer check tells you the places still exist. Plan from the computer for now, and report it: Google's feedback help page gives the path as profile picture > Help & feedback > Send product feedback.
The list has more than 3,000 places
Google's help page is specific: "Saved Lists are limited to 3,000 entries. Lists with more entries may not display properly." Want to go is the list most likely to reach it, since it collects years of saves. The product expert in the December 2024 thread also asked whether affected lists held "hundreds or even thousands of items," because very large lists may not sync.
If a list is near the cap, move a trip's worth of places into a new list of its own. Our guide to Google Maps limits for trip planning covers the other caps that matter on a trip.
Someone deleted or changed the list
Places can disappear for real. These are the ways it happens:
- A shared list you saved. Google's help says a list made by someone else appears under "Lists you saved," but it stays theirs. If the owner deletes it or switches it to Private ("Only you can find your lists"), you lose it too. Ask them to share it again.
- An editor removed places. On a list you invited people to edit, Google says anyone who can view it can also see "who has added or edited places and notes." Open the list and check who changed it. Our guide to sharing a Google Maps list covers editing permissions.
- You deleted a list. Google's help explains how to delete a list but doesn't describe a way to restore one.
- The Screenshots list was deleted. On iPhone and iPad, Google's Screenshot to save help page says that removing the Screenshots list deletes the places saved from screenshots. Our guide to saving places from screenshots has the details.
What the Timeline change did not delete
A lot of the confusion traces back to Timeline. Google moved Timeline, formerly Location History, onto your devices. Its Timeline help page now describes it as saving "your visits and routes to your Google Maps Timeline on each of your signed-in devices," with optional encrypted backups. People who didn't choose their settings by the deadline in Google's email could lose older visits: a reply in the December 2024 thread quotes the email as saying Google would move up to 90 days of data to the first signed-in device and delete the rest.
That change covers visits and routes, the places Google recorded you going to. Saved lists are a separate feature stored in your account. In the same thread, one reply blamed Timeline for the missing Want to go places; the product expert pointed to sync instead. Here's how to tell the three kinds of "my places" apart:
| What's missing | Feature | Where it's kept |
|---|---|---|
| Places you went, past trips, routes | Timeline (Visited in the You tab) | On each device, with optional backup |
| Places you saved to a list | Saved lists | Your Google Account |
| Places you searched for or viewed | Your recent places | Needs history saving turned on |
The last row matters too. Google's You tab help says recent places depend on saving history, which Google still controls through Web & App Activity while it rolls out new Search services settings. Turning history off can empty that view. Google's help doesn't connect it to your saved lists.
Is the problem on Google's side?
If your lists are missing on every device, including the computer, and new threads on r/GoogleMaps or the Google Maps Community started the same day, the problem is probably Google's. Don't delete and rebuild lists in a hurry. Send feedback from the app, keep planning from any copy you have, and check again later.
Keep a copy before your next trip
A trip shouldn't depend on one list syncing to one phone.
- Export your lists. At takeout.google.com, select only Saved, and Google exports each list as a CSV file with names, notes and links. Our guide to exporting a Google Maps list walks through it, including turning the file into a My Maps layer.
- Keep the trip somewhere else too. A My Maps map, a PDF or a spreadsheet keeps working when the app acts up. Our offline itinerary guide covers what to save before you fly.
- Give each trip its own list. A missing trip list is easier to spot than missing places inside a Want to go list with years of saves. Our comparison of Want to go, Travel plans and custom lists explains the setup.
Where Vidtrip fits
Vidtrip, the tool we make, doesn't read or change your Google Maps lists, so it can't bring missing places back. It helps with the backup problem when a trip starts from a YouTube travel guide: paste the guide's link, answer four questions and pay $4.99 once, and in about a minute you get a day-by-day plan with every stop on a map, a PDF, a KML file for Google My Maps and a GPX file for offline map apps. If the video can't be planned from, the payment is refunded automatically.
Open the Lisbon example plan to see a full plan first, or paste a guide's link into the generator.
